In the summer of 2014, Google launched Material Design, an operating system based on real- world principles: Gravity, texture, space, and shadow.

Our team had already designed elements of Material into the PGA Championship and Ryder Cup apps that year.
But for the 2015 PGA Championship, I wanted to fully adopt the design guidelines set forth by Google.
2014 Android Design
2015 Android Screen Flows
In 2014, there were several design decisions in the app that proved difficult for users.
Transparencies, graphic-heavy backgrounds, and multiple-sized content containers looked fine as a Photoshop file, but were less-than ideal once the final app was released.
2014 Scoring Section
The leaderboard contains several pieces of info, such as total scores for each round, and the player’s position throughout the tournament.
2015 Scoring Redesign
A large green course image was used for the background which made it difficult to scan the player’s scoring information.
For the redesign in 2015, I removed the busy background image in place of a neutral color, and placed everything into a container, which greatly improved readability.
Nav Comparison of the 2014 and 2015 Redesign
I redesigned 2015’s navigation by adopting Material Design’s hamburger menu.
I could now have all of the app’s navigation in one central location, which removed the confusing double nav.
2014 Course
Placing content that appeared to float on the screen within a card was another successful design change for 2015.
This was most notable on the Course page. Hole images, flyover buttons, and statistical graphs looked un-anchored.
2015 Course Redesign
By containing the information on a card, users could now scan each hole, and have a better sense of where each player was in the tournament, and how they fared during each round.
Key Takeaways from the redesign:
56% increase in engagement for Home section
Successful in driving users to consume more content, in particular Live Video compared to 2014
